Dr Kabiru K. Azeez, Director of the Directorate of University Health Services, has intimated that the University of Cape Coast hospital management is doing its best to bring the cholera cases recorded on campus under control.

He said the number of students of the university suffering from cholera outbreak is soaring as a result of eating from unhygienic places.

Speaking exclusively to ATL FM, Dr. Azeez said students and members of the university community should be cautious of the food they buy.

He further statedthat the Directorate of University Health Services is therefore going round the various market centres to check the environment where cooking takes place.

“We have gone to all the food joints on campus to ascertain how the people involved in cooking keep themselves. We have done these checks before” he said.Dr.

Azeez hinted that most of the students examined alluded to the fact that they ate some food at the science market (north campus) andthat has caused the problem.

“We must make sure that we close down those shops while taking other measures but for the meantime, at the hospital, we have actually put in basic measures to aggressively resuscitate all those that come and we have been able to succeed so far. We are closing down some emergency wards just to take care of this canker”, he noted.

Over 10,000 Ghanaians have been affected by the cholera outbreak, killing more than 80 in seven regions across the country.Majority of infected persons were women and children.
